Opinions of car salespeople vary widely. Like every profession, there are a whole range of good and bad people who go into that business. One thing I can’t stand, though, is the wholly lackadaisical attitude of salespeople who don’t keep up with or pay attention to product knowledge.
I’ve been trying to get hold of a salesman at a Mazda dealer who seems to not know what he’s selling. On Thursday I got his call.
“I sold a Mazda3 this morning. Needs leather in it by the weekend.”
“No problem. What’s the interior color?”
“Black. Outside of the car is red. Stock Number M*****”
“Cool. Lemme grab my notebook. Is it a hatch or sedan? Sport or Touring?”
“I dunno man. It’s red. Automatic. Black inside. Why’s that matter?”
“We have four black leather kits for a Mazda3. Each one has a different back seat.”
“You don’t cut it up there?”
“Nah, man. It’d be twice as expensive and take a whole week. We get kits sewn up off the factory cloth.”
“Can you find it off the stock number?”
As I google the stock number, it’s already been removed from their website and the aggregators that sometimes keep cars on them for a few days after they’re sold.
“Nope. It’s already off your website. Call me when you have all your info.”
I’ve tried to call twice a day Friday and today. No dice. And it seems that he’s been there long enough to have his own desk/office because the voicemail says “This is **** at Mazda ***** extension ***”
And I keep getting “He’s here. let me transfer you to his desk.”
Fick’s sake, man. Just return your call.

I had a complete sad when the Nissan guy (actual Nissan dealership) couldn’t tell me how to turn off auto-blip on the 370Z I was test-driving. I figured it out (hold the button), but damn dude.

during my time selling cars what I found most depressing was dealing with people who, just didn’t care about cars, non-enthusiasts who saw buying a new vehicle as a chore. What was worse tho was realizing that 9/10 of my fellow co-workers, in both sales and service, were also those automotive apathetic people.

I’ve never met a car salesman that is a car guy/gal. I’m sure there are some out there, but most of the ones I've met cant answer the simplest of questions about the car. A Subaru salesman told me they have to take a monthly test on specs but I think it’s like anything else, if you aren’t passionate about it you will probably lose a lot of knowledge after taking the test.

The “Miata Guy” at my local dealership had a ‘98 Miata.
I’ll let that sink in.

Considering that major players -
GM among them
- have been banging the drum on knowledgeability for
75 FUCKING YEARS
at a minimum, car salesmen who don’t know their cars cannot be excused.

The folks at my local Mazda dealer are a nice bunch. But, the salesmen never truly seem to know their product. I can try to start a conversation about features of a certain model on the floor, and they always go kind of silent, like they wish they’d known I was coming so they could have read up.

I bought a subaru from a guy who said, “I was just transfered here from our Chevy store, I don’t know much about these cars.” Luckily there is the internets.

Typical salesperson attitude. Move the metal, promise the world to the customer, get paid (and get that almighty survey), and give no fucks about it after that.
